First of all, before you become skilled at something, you need to be willing to study and learn about it. It’s the same with being a skilled negotiator. You have to be comfortable in talking about money matters. But at the same time you should not be too demeaning or rude in doing so.
Negotiation will surely be a part of our lives. If you bought a new car or house, or if you’ve ever had a job, you have definitely gone through it one way or another. The question is, were you able to get what you want?
Salary Negotiation Skills : Intimidation
The world is filled with bullies and aggressive people. Often, they will imply that you have no choice but to follow their lead.
Don’t get intimidated! Fight for your rights and let them know that you are aware of the rules of engagement. For example, when you’re signing a contract, you’ve got to be permitted to make changes to it – crossing out items that you don’t agree with, as well as adding things you want to include.
Never fall into their trap when they say “you are not allowed to change anything in our contract.” Ask them to provide you with proof that such a rule really exists. If they can’t produce anything, tell them that since you’re signing a contract, your changes must be taken into consideration too.
And when you find yourself cornered with intimidation, there’s a way to get out. Tell them that you are not really the “authority figure.” Say that you need to consult things first with your partner/spouse/boss before making a definite decision. So don’t ever let them pressure you to say yes.
Salary Negotiation Skills : Emotional Attachment
One of the biggest mistakes you could ever make in salary negotiations is to become emotionally attached in bargaining for what you want. Don’t demand, threaten, or shout to get your way. This never works. You should always speak in a nice way and be polished in your approach.
Don’t lose your cool or poise even if the other person is bullying you. Just leave your ego or pride at the door and remain friendly. Remember that if you attack them, they will only fight more and will not back down.
Also, don’t show that you’re too interested in the deal. Try to play a reluctant seller or buyer and it will do wonders for your negotiation.
Salary Negotiation Skills : Win-Win Result
When it comes to the money part, never be the first person to mention a figure. If you’re the buyer you can say “How much is the item?” Or if you’re the seller ask “How much is your budget?”
When you let the other person speak a figure first, you will be well-positioned to give a counter-offer by raising or lowering the number according to your need. Sometimes, you might even be surprised to find out that the amount they mention is actually favorable to you.
The goal should always be a win-win result. If the other person felt that you cheated, you will have a bad name and everybody will refuse to deal with you in the future. So as much as possible, make sure that both parties are satisfied with the outcome of the negotiation. GP
